Counter Terrorism - PICT818
Terrorism is a controversial issue in part because of the debates and confusions around how best to defend against it. This unit will build on PICT802 by critically examining a range of themes central to effective practical counterterrorism, from a community, state, regional and global perspective. Strategic and tactical counter terrorism will be explored with particular focus on key concepts such as radicalization and de-radicalisation, countering violent extremism, and understanding terrorist narratives and counter narratives. Wider issues contextualising the sociology and anthropology of terrorist violence will be considered, as will ethical debates concerning appropriate counterterrorism response, how terrorism ends, and the relationship between counterterrorism and human rights.
