Language in Interaction - LING380
This unit will focus on how people use spoken language to achieve social activity. It will examine how language is employed as a semiotic resource, describing how lexis, syntax, and prosody figure in the organisation of everyday life, and their integration with other semiotic resources (e.g., the body, the material world). It will also explore particular scenes of social activity, such as conversations between friends and family, emergency calls, medical consultations, and interactions involving people with cognitive disorders. This unit will draw on theories and methodologies from a variety of academic traditions to provide students with a multi-perspectival account of how language is used to conduct everyday life.
