Additional Therapeutic Modalities - PSYP905

This unit provides theory and skills training in two additional therapeutic modalities that are highly regarded by many professional psychologists, namely, Narrative Therapy and Schema Therapy. The key elements of each of these approaches are considered, including Narrative Therapy practices such as deconstruction of problem saturated stories, therapeutic file and letter writing, and participating in reflecting teams, and Schema Therapy techniques such as guided imagery, limited re-parenting, flashcards and chair-work. As with PSYP903, the unit is interactive and experiential in that students are supervised whilst observing and practicing application of the respective approaches. Students are instructed in and asked to reflect on the sorts of presentations most likely to benefit from each approach and whether and how these approaches might be integrated with each other and with the techniques taught in PSYP903.
