Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Interpersonal Psychotherapy - PSYP903

This unit provides theory and skills training in two psychotherapeutic treatment approaches for which empirical evidence is considered to be strongest, namely, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT). Instruction in related techniques, namely, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is also provided. Efforts are made to ensure that students have the opportunity to observe and practice the application of these different approaches in effecting attitudinal and behavioural change. Instruction is provided in skills training strategies, role playing techniques, relaxation training and systematic desensitization and cognitive rehearsal, as well as behavioural strategies for use with depressed and anxious clients. Students are instructed in and asked to reflect on the sorts of presentations most likely to benefit from the different treatment approaches and whether and how different approaches might be integrated.
