Anglo-Saxon England - ENGL230
An introduction to the history and literature of early medieval England (from the fifth to the eleventh centuries). Anglo Saxon England emerged on the fringes of the late ancient world to develop a distinctive medieval culture bridging the Mediterranean world of Rome and the northern European world of the Vikings. This society can be approached through its sophisticated and varied writings, ranging from epic poetry and lyrics to law codes and histories – the beginnings of both English literature and English history. The unit will focus on historical developments and literary texts, with a particular interest in the interchange between this culture and its ancient and medieval contexts. We will approach the period through historical texts, literary works, manuscripts and visual arts, and short excerpts of the earliest form of the English language.
