Science, Media and Community - SCOM201
The discipline of science communication is an emerging field of study that has become increasingly important as technological changes influence social structures and patterns of behaviour into the twenty-first century. This field of science communication has been developing in conjunction with an international policy movement towards Public Engagement in Science and Technology (PEST), which seeks to increase public awareness and engagement in these technological changes and their influences on human and global structures. Skills in the discipline area of science communication are becoming of critical importance for scientists, technologists, journalists and policy makers, as well as anyone involved in public and corporate education seeking to effectively communicate clear and accurate information to the community. The importance of these communication practices is evident when considering the public importance of key issues such as genetically modified organisms, global warming and environmental management. This unit explores these practices and concepts through group-based workshops using case studies in an interdisciplinary context. The unit focuses on an interdisciplinary approach through lectures and case studies with group projects integrating students' skills for the examination of keynote issues and themes.
