Movement, Screen and Digital Culture - MMCS330

This unit examines the place of digital technology in both everyday and art performances in relation to questions of identity, subjectivity, and communication in contemporary society. The time spent in class consists of approximately 60 per cent production exercise, and 40 per cent production analysis and theoretical study. Students are expected to work in groups for their production experiments. These production exercises are regarded as works in progress, and are presented publicly in the second half of the semester. One part of the production exercise and analysis work in 2013 will look into the 'live' quality of performance works in 13 Rooms, an internationally recognised Kaldor Public Art project that is scheduled for April, in relation to questions of communication in an increasingly mediatised contemporary society. Students are expected to participate in performance events as well as public forums and master classes associated with the art project, most of which will be held outside the scheduled unit timetable. This project presents an excellent opportunity for students to observe and participate in a professional performance production outside the university context.
