French Language and Cultural Values - FRN373
One of the main hypotheses in the study of cross-cultural communication is that in different language communities people speak differently. These differences, which are profound and systematic, reflect different hierarchies of cultural values. The aim of this unit is to illustrate, through the medium of French, how linguistic evidence can be used to corroborate putative cultural values and how the study of selected communicative norms, phrases, key words and syntactic structures can lead the language learner to either the discovery, or a more subtle understanding, of language-specific cultural values. The main medium of instruction is French.
