The Metamorphosis of Myth - ENGL210
The unit examines uses of myth in literature. It explores transformations of mythical figures and considers how cultures reinvent those figures in order to negotiate issues concerning sexuality and gender, freedom of choice, and the desire to defy boundaries. It also considers the differences between myths and legends, and explores the concept of adaptation as the process by which change occurs. The texts studied in the unit are by writers including Homer, Virgil, Ovid, Marlowe, and Shakespeare, and topics include Venus and Adonis, Sisyphus, King Athur and Robin Hood.
