Writing for Emerging Readers (6-12yrs) - CWPG820
Taught by professional children's writers, this unit focuses on writing for younger readers, including picture books. Book illustration and the role and function of images and text are investigated, however students are not required to illustrate their texts; the focus is on the writing. Critical and analytical discussion of contemporary debates about and books for younger readers is included. New directions in publishing such as interactive texts and e-books are explored. This unit is suitable for students with some experience in narrative writing, who wish to develop their knowledge and practice of writing for young readers. This writing might be experimental and exploratory, or with a view to publication. Assessment is based on students' creative work and reflection, and critical writing about the set texts.
