Language, Literature, and Literacy in ATSI Contexts - ABEC320
This unit introduces the theory and practice of early childhood language, literature and literacy. It begins with the study of storytelling in traditional and contemporary ATSI cultures and moves to explore the literary and literacy potential of a range of children's literature. The unit then focuses on the young child's language development as the child moves from home to school, including issues of first language maintenance and bilingual contexts. Early reading and writing processes are explored as well as implementation and evaluation strategies. This unit focuses on the centrality of language learning and literacy development to educational achievement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as exploring issues of culture and multi-literacies across communities.
