BIOL349: Biodiversity and Conservation

This unit has two basic themes: first, the scientific theory and experimentation that investigates and informs the conservation of biodiversity; and second, the interface between the science and the prevailing economic, political, social and legislative issues. THis unit explores four general themes: Biodiversity; Threatening processes; measurement and analysis; and conservation options. Topics include: the concept of biodiversity; experimental design; conversation technologies; threats to biodiversity; population viability analysis; reserve design and selection; restoration; off-reserve conservation; and monitoring. Laboratory work, for both internal and external students, is carried out in a compulsory block practical session.
