PHL364: Business and Professional Ethics
Recent corporate collapses have highlighted the importance of ethical governance in the corporate sphere. In the first section of this unit we examine the roles and responsibilities of corporations in relation to the societies and environments in which they operate. Topics to be discussed include: justice, markets and capitalism; the obligations of corporations to stakeholders as well as shareholders; corporate social responsibility; environmental sustainability; globalisation and international business ethics. In the second section of the unit we examine the responsibilities of corporations towards their employees, as well as the rights and obligations of employees. Topics discussed include discrimination; trust and codes of conduct; whistle blowing; trade secrets and corporate disclosure; marketing, truth and advertising; and information technology and privacy. The unit is relevant to students in accounting and business as well as in the humanities and social sciences.
