ACSH100: Academic Communication in the Social Sciences and Humanities
What do lecturers in social sciences and humanities expect of their students? What is critical reading? What kinds of written assessment tasks (text types) do social sciences and/or humanities students have to write, and how do they write them? All these questions are discussed in this unit. The unit assists students to develop critical and analytical skills in reading, writing and discussing issues in humanities and the social sciences. Issues and readings related to contemporary problems in the humanities and social sciences are used to develop students' ability to read critically; develop and organise arguments; refer appropriately to the work of experts in the field; write a range of well structured texts; and collaborate with others. The unit is strongly recommended for students who have obtained a Band 4 or less in HSC English (or the equivalent) or less than a 7 in IELTS (or the equivalent).
