ACSC100: Academic Communication in Science

What do lecturers in science expect of their students? Is there a special language of science and what are its characteristics? What kinds of written assessment tasks (text types) do science students have to write, and how do they write them? These questions are discussed in this unit. The unit assists students to develop critical and analytical skills in reading, writing and discussing issues in science. Students work in groups to research and discuss contemporary scientific problems and are guided in developing their ability to read critically; develop and organise an argument; refer appropriately to the work of experts in the field; write a range of well structured texts; and collaborate with others. The unit is strongly recommended for students who have obtained a Band 4 or less in HSC English (or the equivalent) or less than a 7 in IELTS (or the equivalent).
