Graphic Novels - ENGL369

This unit focuses on analysing verbal and visual narratives across a variety of graphic novels. Students will trace the historical development and textual mechanics of sequential art using classic and contemporary examples of the genre, and consider the multitude of ways in which the form can be presented. The unit will engage with research and scholarship on graphic novels, and will centre on key theoretical and conceptual issues such as visual communication and literacy, politics, gender, ethnicity, the environment, and the evolution of the literary canon.
