Overview and Aims of the Program | Macquarie’s Graduate Certificate of Education Studies programs provide a research-led, practice-focused learning environment that enables teachers to enhance their professional knowledge and skills in order to become more highly accomplished classroom practitioners, to better support colleagues in enhancing their own levels of proficiency, or to take the lead in shaping school-wide programs, and to those in leadership positions who seek to enhance their professional practice. Teachers who complete the Advanced Practices in Teaching and Learning specialisation can tailor a program to develop a deeper understanding of how their students learn, and how that learning is influenced by their students’ characteristics, and contemporary theories and practices in curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and reporting, and ICT. The knowledge and skills they acquire enable them to make more informed decisions about content, sequence, and teaching strategies for their own students, and they are also better placed to support their colleagues to create quality, evidence based, learning and teaching programs. The Leading Teaching and Learning specialisation encourages teachers who already operate at a high level of accomplishment to broaden their sphere of influence by providing them with the knowledge and skills to take the lead in initiating and evaluating programs which enhance teaching and learning, and which develop their fellow teachers’ professional knowledge, practice and engagement through initiatives such as coaching, mentoring and professional learning. The Educational Leadership specialisation is designed to enhance the professional practice of those in leadership positions in school and early childhood contexts. Students explore contemporary theory and practice of educational leadership, and learning activities are designed to assist students in addressing professional standards for leadership that exist in Australian education jurisdictions. |

Recognition of Prior Learning | Macquarie University may recognise prior formal, informal and non-formal learning for the purpose of granting credit towards, or admission into, a program. Graduate Destinations and Employability | The Graduate Certificate of Education Studies caters to teachers who seek to enhance their professional knowledge and skills to become more highly accomplished classroom practitioners, to better support colleagues in enhancing their own levels of proficiency, or to take the lead in shaping school-wide programs, and to those in leadership positions in school and early childhood contexts who seek to enhance their professional practice. Those who wish to extend their knowledge can articulate into either the Master of Education or the Master of Educational Leadership degree. |

Inherent requirements are the essential components of a course or program necessary for a student to successfully achieve the core learning outcomes of a course or program. Students must meet the inherent requirements to complete their Macquarie University course or program.
Inherent requirements for Macquarie University programs fall under the following categories:
Physical: The physical inherent requirement is to have the physical capabilities to safely and effectively perform the activities necessary to undertake the learning activities and achieve the learning outcomes of an award.
Cognition: The inherent requirement for cognition is possessing the intellectual, conceptual, integrative and quantitative capabilities to undertake the learning activities and achieve the learning outcomes of an award.
Communication: The inherent requirement for communication is the capacity to communicate information, thoughts and ideas through a variety of mediums and with a range of audiences.
Behavioural: The behavioural inherent requirement is the capacity to sustain appropriate behaviour over the duration of units of study to engage in activities necessary to undertake the learning activities and achieve the learning outcomes of an award.
