Greek Art: Classical, Classicising and Iconic - AHIS203
This unit sets out the principles of ancient Greek and Byzantine art and analyses key works in their historical contexts. It then examines reinterpretations of classical and Byzantine motifs themes. Student will critique the manipulation of iconic imagery from antiquity to the present by looking at case studies such as the Parthenon as a symbol of democracy and the influence of Byzantine painting on the development of modern abstract art. Learning outcomes include an appreciation of the legacy of styles, themes, techniques and philosophies from ancient Greece into the global present.
