This unit focuses on important theoretical aspects of phonetics and theoretical principles underpinning the study of speech production. The unit provides targeted training in the phonemic and phonetic transcription of spoken English with a concentration on Australian English. Students develop an understanding of sound systems and their function in language. They learn to use the IPA and gain a thorough understanding of the articulation of vowels and consonants as well as complex articulations, airstream mechanisms and laryngeal features. Phonological principles relating to phonemes and allophones, syllables, and word stress are also addressed.
