'Family Values' in the 21st Century - GEND620
Family values are frequently invoked in Australia and other nations as a conservative counterbalance to shifts in the relations between the sexes, and other dimensions of difference, such as race, ethnicity, sexuality, class and age. Whilst the rhetoric of family values appears to want to return us to an earlier era in our thinking and social structures, such a transformation of the world is taking place that challenges faced by contemporary families require new solutions. By exploring issues such as the gendered division of labour, marriage, work and family, divorce, and care work, this unit will introduce conceptual frameworks to help students make sense of the changing landscapes of families in our increasingly globalising world.
