Economics - WFEC001

The aim of this unit is to provide an introduction to economic theory, and a foundation in micro and macro-economic principles, to prepare students for first year undergraduate studies in commerce and business. A focus of the unit is the development of language skills and assisting students to understand subject specific terms and concepts as well as to provide examples of their application in the context of modern market economy. The first half of the unit provides coverage of microeconomic concepts such as scarcity and choice, supply and demand, price elasticity, production costs, revenues and profits as well as the introduction to market structures. The second half covers macroeconomic concepts including GDP, inflation and unemployment as well as government's macroeconomic policies used to influence them.
