Counselling and Professional Practice - PSYS834

This highly interactive unit concentrates on providing practical training in basic counselling skills such as reflective listening and empathic responding and questioning. The development of these skills to more advanced counselling techniques is also covered by providing an introduction to the main counselling theories and approaches that will be covered in more detail in more advanced units. There is also a strong focus on ethical and legal issues and mandatory reporting, a workshop on suicide assessment and prevention, and another one on multicultural counselling. The unit includes eight hours of skills practice in small groups and a live skills assessment in small groups followed by feedback and reflexions on practice.
