This unit deals with population subgroups that pose special challenges for professional psychologists. In this unit, students will be instructed in methods to assess and manage indigenous and CALD clients, clients with psychotic disorders, clients with brain injury or otherwise requiring rehabilitation, clients with substance abuse problems and forensic clients. The focus is on the unique challenges posed by these different presentations and on the counselling and therapeutic approaches most likely to be effective in managing each. Training is provided in cultural sensitivity and working with interpreters, the identification and management of psychotic symptoms, issues involved in the use of supportive counselling, rehabilitation, trauma and pain management and the use of Motivational Interviewing techniques in managing substance abuse problems.
