Subjects, Citizens, Slaves: Historicising Australian Citizenship - MHIS715
Citizenship stands at the centre of current debates about nation, identity and belonging worldwide. This unit explores the evolution of Australian citizenship with a particular focus on debates about citizenship in historical context. What does citizenship mean and how has it developed since 1788? What are the discourses and their broader contexts and what do moments of contestation tell us about citizenship in Australia? What is the language of citizenship, in particular, the relative weightings of rights and responsibilities. In particular, we trace various discourses of rights (human, women's, ethnic, Indigenous) and examine their impact on conceptions of citizenship.
