Advanced Topics in Belief Formation and its Disorders - COGS760
This unit examines the formation and evaluation of beliefs and how this can go wrong in different psychiatric and neurological conditions. It considers the cognitive processes that are disrupted when delusions develop and persist, and examines the differences between more bizarre delusions and delusions with more 'ordinary' content, such as some paranoid delusions. Related psychiatric symptoms, such as hallucinations in psychotic mental illnesses, are also examined. The unit covers models of delusions and related psychiatric symptoms and the different conditions in which these symptoms can arise, such as schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and following brain injury. The unit also considers current psychological approaches to the treatment of these symptoms.
