Advanced Topics in Language and its Disorders - COGS740
Acquired language impairments such as aphasia (eg, after stroke) can result in a variety of different symptoms, affecting spoken comprehension and production, as well as reading and writing in various ways. This unit is divided into four modules. The first module gives an introduction to the history of language models and the advent of neuropsychology. Classic case studies will be introduced to familiarise students with the first theoretical explanations of aphasia that in turn led to the development of current language models. The second module will introduce language production models, focusing on language processes in healthy adult speakers. The third module will discuss the breakdown of spoken language after brain-impairment. Finally, in a fourth module, we will introduce assessment tasks that can detect problems at separate levels in language processing, and reveal the cognitive architecture underlying language. Overall, this unit will demonstrate how language information is stored in our mental lexicon.
