Advanced Topics in Philosophy and Cognitive Science - PHL863

Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of psychological phenomena such as thinking, memory, emotion, decision making, dreaming, intelligent action, or imagination. It incorporates many disparate scientific projects, and a range of theoretical frameworks.
This unit covers the conceptual foundations of the cognitive sciences, with a focus on recent debates and contemporary controversies: it also addresses key problems about relations between the individual mind and the social world. Students gain a thorough grounding in the basic philosophical issues underlying the scientific study of the mind, and also engage in specialised study of select topics and cognitive domains.
