Euro-Visions of Islam and the Middle East - MHPG851
This unit offers a critical survey of European ideas and understanding of Islam and the Middle East from the Middle Ages to the present day. Beginning with the Spanish reconquest of the Iberian peninsula and the medieval crusades in the Holy Land, our analysis of European perceptions of Islam and the Orient encompasses early modern conflict, engagement and alliances with the Ottoman empire; the rise of European travel to Ottoman lands and the Middle East; French and British imperialism in the region; World War I and the making of the modern Middle East; postcolonial immigration to Europe; and contemporary debates about Islam in Europe. Anti-colonialism and decolonisation brought inevitable challenges to Western scholarship about 'the Orient'. We evaluate the impact and legacy of Edward Said's influential work Orientalism (1978) on the humanities; the various critiques of Said's thesis; and the ways in which current historical research into Orientalism in 'high' and popular culture is both challenging and refining this thesis.
