Grammar, Meaning and Discourse - LING900
This unit focuses on the analysis of natural discourse; language as a system for meaning and wording; the relationship between language and its social context; and the constitution/shape of different discourse types. The emphasis is on practical analytical skills, focusing on language data from participants' work and social contexts, integrating the study of lexis, grammar, discourse and pragmatics into a coherent theory of language in use. Students choose their own text/s for the major assignment, giving them the opportunity to explore a social context relevant to their own lives.
