Education and Culture - EDCN818

This advanced theory unit considers the link between education and modern, western culture, and explores education as a cultural manifestation and cultural product. The unit begins with a discussion of culture, and the various ways that it has been theorised, and the ways that it has been linked to social and community activity. The link with education is made through an examination of various aspects of youth culture, identity construction, and the ways that culture shapes and is shaped by commercial interests. These ideas are then applied by considering the ways that education is represented in film and other popular cultural material. The consideration of these ideas will involve examining relevant scholarly literature, and considering theoretical and analytic perspectives.
