Organic and Biological Chemistry A - CBMS803

We examine advanced topics in organic chemistry, relevant to biology and biological systems with an underlying theme of the structure and reactivity of proteins. Topics include: carboxylic acids and amines; alpha- and beta-amino acids, peptides and proteins; polar rearrangements and spectroscopic identification of organic compounds. This unit requires good skills in organic chemistry, and a background in other aspects of chemistry and/or biochemistry will be advantageous. The laboratory sessions are aimed at developing skills in organic synthesis, using the reactions studied in lectures and in the spectroscopic identification of organic/biological molecules. Skills in computational chemistry and spectrometric identification of organic compounds will be taught at an advanced level.
