History, Archaeology and Documents of the Egyptian First Intermediate Period - AHPG873

The unit will examine the archaeological remains of the Egyptian First Intermediate Period from different sites such as Saqqara, Fayum, Beni Hassan, Meir, Balat, Abydos, Thebes and Aswan, with a focus on analysing the architectural and artistic features of tomb complexes as well as the characteristics of stela and False Doors from this period. A study of the important texts of the period will be undertaken, which illustrate the unstable political situation of Egypt after the fall of the previous Old Kingdom period. The texts to be studied in the original language and interpreted will include the biography of Ankhtifi, the Admonitions of Ipuwer and the Dispute of a Man and his Soul.
