Christianity in Egypt - AHPG856

This unit provides a detailed examination of the history of Christianity in Egypt from its origins to the end of the first millennium CE. Beginning with the New Testament and other early Christian texts, it examines in depth the traditional account of the foundation of the Church in Egypt by Mark the evangelist; the persecutions of the third and fourth centuries; the papyrological evidence for Christianity in Egypt; the schisms within Egyptian Christianity; and the Church after the Arab conquest of Egypt. Students examine ancient texts in depth, use advanced source critical techniques, and focus closely on documentary sources.
