Europe and Islam - POL372

The primary objective of this unit is to introduce students to the complex interactions of European and Islamic civilization from the time of the Prophet right up until present day. With the end of the Cold War, some observers have claimed that Islam, and more particularly Islamic fundamentalism, is the new enemy of Western Civilization. The unit examines the origins and substance of this claim by drawing not only on the history and politics of the encounter between Islam and Europe, but on literature, art and film as well.
