Introduction to Global Politics - POL108
This unit introduces the study of contemporary international relations, designed to give students a basic understanding of the actors, institutions and ideas that influence global politics. It provides a set of analytical tools for making sense of international politics over a variety of historical periods and geographical regions; chief among these tools are the competing theories of international relations: realism, liberalism, and their rival alternatives. Issues examined in this course include problems of war, terrorism, and other aspects of international security. As well as armed conflict, states and other actors engage in many other issues, such as the global economy and development, human rights, and the environment, involving varying degrees of cooperation and competition. In addressing these issues, attention will also be paid to Australia’s place in the international system, and the possible directions global politics may take into the 21st century.
