Culture and Power in Renaissance Europe - MHIS322
This unit explores the extraordinary outburst of creativity in Europe that occurred following the fourteenth century which we now call the Renaissance. Between 1400 and 1650, intellectuals, artists and a surprising number of ordinary people sought answers to questions about their own identities, the nature of a moral life, the virtues of civil society, and their relationships with both the natural world and the divine. This search, beginning in Italy and spreading across Europe laid the foundations for many of the values and ideas of modern Western society. This unit explores these developments with a particular focus on how power (in all its manifestations) shaped and was shaped by Renaissance culture
