European History from the French Revolution to Freud - MHIS221
This unit traces the emergence of some of the key forms of Western modernity, including enlightenment rationality, bicameral politics, bourgeois society, industrial capitalism, class formation, liberalism, socialism, feminism, nationalism and secular science. It focuses particularly on political and cultural themes in the analysis of these topics. It ends on the eve of World War One when new ideas such as psychology, relativity, and nihilism threatened to undermine all that had been consolidated in the preceding century.
