Phonetics: Transcription and Theory - LING398
This unit focuses on important theoretical aspects of phonetics and phonology and provides targeted training in the phoneemic and phonetic transcription of spoken English and phonological analysis of known and unknown languages. Students learn to use the IPA to explore aspects of the world's languages and gain a thorough understanding of the articulation of vowels and consonants as well as complex articulations, airstream and mechanisms and laryngeal features. Phonological principles relating to phonemes and allophones, syllables, and word stress are also addressed.
