Manga and Japanese Contemporary Culture - JPS124
It is widely acknowledged that manga and anime hold a significant place in contemporary Japanese culture and beyond. This unit provides an insight into the unique visual and linguistic narratives of manga and anime (such as symbolism; conventions; and the specific features and issues of manga/anime creation and circulation). A number of representative works are examined from socio-cultural, psychological, philosophical and literary perspectives. In addition, as the first manga/anime unit, this unit incorporates basic skills training for research and essay writing. Assessment is based on a number of assignments, such as online quizzes, a PowerPoint presentation and a 1,200–1,500 word essay in English. All lectures are conducted in English and no prior knowledge of Japanese language is required.
