Programmable Logic Design - ELEC241
This unit introduces some of the hardware components and software tools used to design digital systems. For systems of moderate complexity we choose to use Generic Array Logic devices (GALs) and simple software based on Boolean equations (OPALjr). For greater complexity we choose Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and a variety of software provided by the manufacturer (Xilinx), including Boolean equations, schematic entry, state machines, and a high-level design language (VHDL) itself supporting a variety of modes. Students perform some set practical exercises individually, but form teams to work on a larger project which occupies some weeks.
