Applied Microeconomics - ECON215
Applied microeconomics examines the practical management and policy issues that impact on households, businesses and governments. It covers demand and supply; markets; business operations and strategy; business investment; regulatory policy; privatisation; green economics; business in the international environment; and business finance from a microeconomics perspective. Having completed this unit students understand microeconomic terminology and reasoning. Students become familiar with major sources of microeconomic data from organisations such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Students are able to participate with confidence in debates on business and microeconomic issues, such as the factors behind business success, and permits versus taxes as ways of limiting carbon emissions. Comprehension of lectures and readings is tested by tutorial questions, a mid-term emphasising numeric and factual grasp, and a review essay and final examination emphasising skill in integrating factual knowledge and critical reasoning.
