Contemporary Dance 1 - DANC220

Based in dance principles rather than generic technique, this unit is structured around the physical realities of weight; flow; rhythm; extension; succession; fall and recovery; muscular memory; creativity; improvisation; focus and partnering. This dance class mode of instruction employs a wide variety of dance genres to allow students to discover their unique style while improving their skill and fitness. A variety of teachers offer instruction in Modern Dance, Hip Hop, Contact Improvisation, Yoga and Social Dance forms. Students have opportunities to create their own dances. Students also articulate, describe and analyse dance practices in written assessments. Assessment is based on improvement, so this unit suits both the experienced dancer and the novice.
