Transnational Hong Kong and Bollywood: Politics and Pleasures - CUL323
Hong Kong cinema and Bollywood (aka Hindi-Urdu cinema from Mumbai) are two transnational 'Asian' film industries often recognisable in a short-hand manner through the genres of action or the song and dance musical. Yet, a closer examination of these film industries reveal a complex history of cinematic traffic with film cultures around the world and negotiations with specific postcolonial histories of film aesthetics and cultural politics. These travels and negotiations may be discussed through theoretical concepts such as nationalism and transnationalism, through cultural, gendered, and queer meanings of Chineseness and Indianness, through histories of displacement and diaspora, and through modes of utopia and nostalgia. Situated within a contemporary media assemblage, these two cinemas offer a unique way of thinking through the specificities of national and transnational politics and pleasures.
