Working Cultures: Representations, Identities and Resistances - CUL224
Work has traditionally been studied from economic and sociological perspectives. But the types of work we do and the way we do it also are shaped by and help to shape our culture, identities and values. This unit begins by considering the ways that work has been represented in a range of media and cultural forms, from photography and lifestyle magazines, to docu-soaps and makeover shows. What (and whose) work is made visible and valued in these texts? In the second part of the unit, we consider contemporary cultures of work, and the way work shapes our subjectivity and identities. In an age where both work and entertainment see us propped in front of computer screens, for example, is the distinction between work and pleasure disappearing? The final part of the unit focuses more specifically on work within media, cultural and creative industries. We ask whether media, culture and manipulation of information form a more central part of work in the modern world. How can the theoretical frames and critical questions of cultural studies be used in the workplace? As part of their final project, students undertake an interview with a media and cultural studies graduate, or someone working in cultural and creative industries, to help them reflect on the role of culture and cultural studies in work.
