Saints, Shamans, Cults and Demons: The Anthropology of Contemporary Religions - ANTH107
Gaining knowledge about the varieties of religious experience and practices in the contemporary world is an essential aspect of understanding modern societies. This unit covers some of the core themes of the anthropology o f religion and introduces students to a wide range of contexts in which we can study the religious. Topics covered include; sacred and holy places; pilgrims, relics and tourism; modern media and religious traditions; Christianity, saints and miracles in the Western world; magic, sorcery and religion; revitalisation movements and cargo cults; 'small' and 'large' traditions in the anthropology of religion; and doing ethnography in the Church.
