Speech Pathology III: Alternative and Augmentative Communication and Severe Communication Impairment - SPH819

In this unit, students will be introduced to a variety of conditions that are associated with complex communication needs, including developmental disability, cerebral palsy, and autism. Alternative and augmentative communication options that are available to individuals with these conditions will be presented. Systems for both children and adults whose speech, gestural and handwritten communication is restricted due to either developmental or acquired etiology will be discussed. Issues affecting families and carers, and the provision of services will also be presented. This unit focuses on functional communication and a social model of disability.
