Counselling and Professional Practice - PSYA901
This interactive unit provides practical training in counselling such as reflective listening and advanced empathic responding with a psychodynamic focus and client centred strategies. Teaching is done in an experiential fashion to foster skill development and student counselling skills are assessed directly. Students are trained to assess and determine intervention strategies with children and families where abuse and neglect are apparent, with couples and youth, and in cases with alcohol and drug addiction. Students are exposed to the relevant codes of ethics and professional practice, legal issues related to mandatory reporting and prescriptive drugs used for mental health.
