Using Research - POL822

This unit examines the use of and reliance upon research in policy making, in the context of the pressure for "evidence-based" policy and contestability of advice. It introduces the links between epistemology and methodology in research, and provides a critical review of the use of research methods in the social sciences. The unit explores ethical issues in research, and develops skills in designing and interpreting qualitative and quantitative research relevant to the policy process.
