Research Methods in Philosophy and Cognitive Science - PHL826

This unit introduces students to a number of research methods used in philosophy and cognitive science. These include literature searches and reviews, conceptual analysis, methods of argument, research models in cognitive science, research design, experimental hypothesis testing, and issues in interpreting experimental data, including reliability and validity and limitations on data interpretation. Guest speakers will overview methodological issues alternating with a student-led journal club, where we together critically review articles chosen by students from their own area. The unit will also address formulating a research question, Human Research Ethics guidelines and processes, presentation of work, information skills and Endnote training.
