Media, Borders, Security - MMCS826

This unit examines media representations of the concepts of borders and security. It situates the study of these concepts in the charged context of a post-9/11 world preoccupied with borders, security and the movement of peoples. Students will be enabled to deploy a range of critical theories in order to critique and evaluate media representations of the borderscapes (such as national borders, airports, and territorial waters) and sites of exception (such as immigration detention centres and CIA black sites) that are used to control, manage and detain figures who are deemed to be 'suspect' (terrorists, refugees, or racialised subjects).
